Η έρευνα που διενεργείται στο ΙΕΛΥΑ στο αντικείμενο των Ασθενειών προσαρμόζεται στις σύγχρονες απαιτήσεις της γεωργίας και στοχεύει στην αντιμετώπιση των φυτονόσων θέτοντας ως απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση την υγεία του καταναλωτή και την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος. Πεδία έρευνας αποτελούν:
- η μελέτη ενδημικών και νέων-αναδυόμενων ασθενειών σε σημαντικές καλλιέργειες (π.χ. αμπέλι, ελιά, εσπεριδοειδή,υποτροπικά, κηπευτικά).
- η ανάπτυξη καινοτόμων διαγνωστικών μεθόδων με τη συνδυαστική χρήση διεπιστημονικών τεχνολογιών.
- η μελέτη της πληθυσμιακής δομής, των στοιχείων βιολογίας, φυσιολογίας, γενετικής και επιδημιολογίας των υπαίτιων παθογόνων.
- η διερεύνηση της αλληλεπίδρασης φυτοπαθογόνων μικροβίων με τα φυτά-ξενιστές και το περιβάλλον και η κατανόηση των μηχανισμών παθογένεσης και άμυνας, συμβάλλοντας στη χάραξη καινοτόμων στρατηγικών ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης ασθενειών.
Σε πρακτικό επίπεδο, πραγματοποιείται αξιολόγηση των μεθόδων διαχείρισης ασθενειών που αφορούν στην αξιοποίηση ανθεκτικών γονοτύπων φυτών, βιολογικών παραγόντων, αλλά και στη βελτιστοποίηση ήδη υπαρχόντων μέσων διαμέσου διαχείρισης της ανθεκτικότητας των φυτοπαθογόνων στα χημικά σκευάσματα.
