The grapevine collection of IOSV (Viticulture Department of Athens) maintains more than 900 accessions of cultivars and wild species, of which approximately 550 are indigenous, Greek cultivars. The collection is located at Lykovrysi Attica (0.7 ha) and Syggrou Estate Attica (0.4 ha) and it is considered to be particularly important for its potential contribution to the development of the national wine sector, as it includes a large diversity of genetic resources from different regions of Greece and, in addition, rare cultivars, disappeared from their growing centers, are saved within the collection. A second, minor collection of grapevine cultivars and clones is maintained at Messara and Katsampas districts at Heraklion, Crete (mostly Cretan and South Aegean varieties). A virus-free and of known SSR-based molecular profile nursery stock (pre-basic material) is maintained in insect-proof nethouse facilities at IOSV departments at Athens and Heraklion
