The objective of Subtropical Crops is the applied research on arboricultural subtropical species which can be grown in Greece.

The research includes:

  • Ex situ conservation and enriching the national collections of avocado, prickle pear, loquat, mango, carob, banana, cherimoya, pecan, date palm, feijoa, guava, carambola, macadamia and litchi.
  • Study of the physiology of subtropical species in Greek climatic conditions.
  • Supervision of the nutritional status of subtropical crops, their irrigation needs, pests and diseases control.
  • Production and evaluation of new varieties and rootstocks, aiming at early season production, adaptation to new climate data, fruit quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress.
  • Conservation and production of healthy genetic material.
  • Study and application of advanced propagation techniques (in vitro technique and hydroponics).
  • Study and evaluation of pioneer compounds, for yield and fruit quality, through agronomic measurements and nutritional status.
