Leaf analysis is the most useful tool for detecting nutrient deficiencies and/or toxicities in fruit trees. Within the Public Services program of IOSV, the Laboratory of Plant Mineral Nutrition and Physiology at Chania is carrying out analyses for the following nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Copper and Boron. In specific cases, leaf Sodium and Chloride can also be determined in order to detect toxicity problems due to salinity. In all cases, fertilizing guidelines are issued based upon the nutritional status of the trees.
