The Research conducted in the field of Plant Diseases in IOSV focuseson the requirements of modern agriculture and aims at an effective disease management with respect to human health and environmental protection. Areas of research are:

  • the study of endemic and emerging plant diseases in important crops (e.g. grapevines, olive, citrus, subtropical, vegetable crops).
  • the development of innovative diagnostic methods with the combined use of interdisciplinary technologies.
  • the study of population structure, biology, physiology, genetics and epidemiology of the phytopathogens.
  • the investigation of interaction of phytopathogenic microbes with host-plants and the environment and understanding ofthe mechanisms underlying pathogenesis, recognition and plant defense, contributingto the development of innovative integrated disease management strategies.

At a practical perspective, disease management methods which concern the utilization of resistant plant genotypes, biocontrol agents, along with the optimization of existing means through the management of microbial drug resistance are evaluated and applied.

The researchers involved in Plant Diseases are Dr. Markakis, Dr. Mathioudakis, Dr. Pappi, Dr. Kavroulakis.
